Michigan Democratic lawmakers have chosen Indian-American Sikh legislator Ranjeev Puri as their nominee for Speaker of the state House of Representatives, placing him in line to become the first Indian-American and Sikh to hold the position.

The incoming Democratic House majority selected Puri, 42, on Thursday. The full House will elect its Speaker when the new Legislature convenes in January.

Puri’s rise to the leadership position follows a political journey that began in the aftermath of a 2012 mass shooting at a Sikh gurdwara in Oak Creek, Wisconsin, a community closely connected to his childhood.

The August 5 attack left six worshippers dead. Puri’s parents had helped establish the Sikh community, although the family had moved away before the shooting. He later said the tragedy, which affected people he knew personally, strengthened his resolve to challenge religious hatred and push for stronger gun laws.

At the time, Puri was working on Barack Obama’s re-election campaign. He recalled discussing the shooting and the need for action with the then US President. Obama subsequently encouraged him to pursue public office, telling him, “The representation you want starts with you,” according to Puri’s account.

Born in Racine, Wisconsin, in 1984, Puri is the son of Indian immigrants who moved to the United States in the early 1970s. He studied economics and finance at Ohio State University before earning an MBA from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.

His professional experience includes working at Chrysler, Google’s business strategy office and on budget and finance matters for Obama’s campaign. He also founded SooFly Entertainment, an initiative promoting South Asian cultural awareness.

Puri entered the Michigan House in 2020, representing a constituency in Canton and becoming the state’s first Sikh American legislator. He served as assistant Democratic Caucus whip before becoming majority whip in 2023. After Republicans took control of the House in the 2024 elections, he was elected Minority Leader.

His legislative work has included measures addressing hate crimes and attacks on religious and cultural institutions. A bill he introduced helped establish sentencing guidelines for the offence of institutional desecration, which became law in December 2023.

Following the Michigan State University shooting in 2023, Puri also sponsored legislation seeking to establish extreme risk protection orders. His House bill passed that chamber, although the measure that ultimately became law was a separate Senate-sponsored bill. He also co-sponsored legislation expanding background checks that was enacted.

In February 2025, Puri opposed a Republican-backed resolution seeking to link state funding for local governments to their cooperation with federal immigration enforcement. He argued that the proposal was unfair to immigrant communities.

His family experiences have also influenced his work. After his wife, Nidhi, suffered a postpartum heart attack associated with spontaneous coronary artery dissection, Puri introduced a resolution to raise awareness about the condition. The House adopted it in February 2026. The couple have four young children.

With Democrats returning to the House majority following the November election, Puri now faces the task of leading the chamber and working with Republicans. Representative Tom Kunse has been chosen to lead the Republican caucus.

Puri has said his priorities include improving household incomes, supporting population growth and addressing the economic pressures facing Michigan families. He has also indicated that he wants the Legislature to focus on the impact of legislation rather than simply the number of bills passed.

“I think at times, sometimes it’s on the quantity of how many public acts have been passed, but for me, it’s the impact of the bills that we do,” he told Michigan Advance.

His nomination marks a significant step in his political career, although his elevation to Speaker will depend on the formal vote when the new Legislature meets in January.
