Punjab has recorded 2,347 stubble-burning incidents so far this paddy harvesting season, with Tarn Taran accounting for the highest number of cases at 558, according to the latest data of the Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB).
The report, updated till November 4, shows that environmental compensation amounting to Rs 40.37 lakh has been imposed across the state, of which Rs 23.05 lakh has been recovered.
Enforcement measures have included inspections of 1,942 fields, with fires confirmed at 868 locations. Environmental compensation has been imposed in 801 cases, while 647 FIRs have been registered. Revenue records have been marked with red entries in 723 cases, and 689 warning notices have been issued.
After Tarn Taran, Ferozepur reported 316 incidents, Amritsar 207, Bathinda 167 and Sangrur 163, highlighting the continuing spread of the practice across several districts.
In Patiala, 110 stubble-burning incidents have been reported. Officials inspected 67 locations and confirmed fires at 24. Environmental compensation was imposed in 15 cases, with fines totalling Rs 80,000, of which Rs 35,000 has been recovered.
The district also recorded 21 FIRs, red entries in revenue records in 10 cases and 25 warning notices.
The PPCB data further shows that harvesting has been completed across 85.10 per cent of Punjab’s total paddy area of 32.87 lakh hectares. However, field fires continue to be reported despite the progress in harvesting and enforcement action.
The administration has been carrying out inspections, imposing penalties and registering cases to discourage farmers from burning crop residue, but the latest figures indicate that eliminating the practice remains a challenge.
