Lucky loser Mika Stojsavljevic, the 2025 US Open junior champion, secured the first WTA main-draw victory of her career by defeating former Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin in the first round of the Hong Kong Tennis Open on Wednesday.
The 17-year-old Briton recovered after surrendering a 3-0 double-break lead in the second set before winning the closely contested decider 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. It marked her second major win of the year, following her victory over then-world No. 56 Talia Gibson during Billie Jean King Cup qualifying in April.
Stojsavljevic had lost in the final round of qualifying for the WTA 250 event but entered the main draw as a lucky loser after Canadian Leylah Fernandez withdrew. She was informed of her participation just an hour before facing Kenin.
Stojsavljevic began playing tennis at the age of seven at Ealing Tennis Club. She became the first British player in 15 years to win the US Open junior title and made her tour debut in Tokyo in 2024. She reached a career-high fifth place in the junior world rankings before turning professional in 2025.
The same year, she made her Grand Slam main-draw debut as a wild-card entrant at Wimbledon and also competed in qualifying events at Queen’s, Nottingham and Eastbourne. Earlier this year, she reached the quarter-finals of the WTA 125 event in Birmingham.
In another match, Claire Liu defeated eighth seed and 2024 finalist Katie Boulter 7-5, 6-4 to reach her second consecutive WTA quarter-final, following her run in Guangzhou the previous week.
