India pacer Anshul Kamboj credited his focus on consistent line and length for his match-winning performance in the first ODI against New Zealand, where he returned figures of 2-22 in 10 overs, including two maidens, at Eden Park on Wednesday.
The Haryana pacer dismissed Mitchell Santner and Nathan Smith as India bowled out New Zealand for 185. Kamboj received the Player of the Match award for his disciplined spell.
“The key was just consistent length and line, not thinking about how the wicket is behaving, just the basic plan, bowling on right lines and right areas,” Kamboj said.
He added that the wobble-seam delivery worked particularly well on the surface. “The wobble seam ball was working very well, so I was using that again and again,” he said.
Kamboj said his preparation focused on maintaining the right lengths and lines while studying the strengths and weaknesses of opposition batters. He also said he relied on reading the pitch and identifying the most effective deliveries rather than making major adjustments to conditions.
India chased a rain-revised target of 143 in 22.4 overs to win by five wickets and take a 1-0 lead in the five-match series. The second ODI will be played in Wellington on Saturday.
