The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), in coordination with the Ministry of External Affairs, Ministry of Home Affairs, UAE authorities and Delhi Police, has secured the extradition of fugitive Sajeer Palli Mooppam from the United Arab Emirates to India.
Mooppam was wanted in connection with a sexual assault case registered by Delhi Police. According to investigators, he and an accomplice allegedly administered an intoxicating substance to a 20-year-old woman, rendering her unconscious and incapable of resisting.
The CBI statement said the accused then took the woman to a hotel and fraudulently checked in using the identity credentials of a third party to conceal his identity. Investigators alleged that she was sexually assaulted while incapacitated. The allegations were subsequently supported by medical examinations and forensic evidence, the agency said. A charge sheet has been filed before the competent court.
At the request of Delhi Police, the CBI facilitated the publication of an INTERPOL Red Corner Notice against Mooppam. He was later located and apprehended by UAE authorities following a request from INTERPOL’s National Central Bureau in New Delhi.
After completion of the required legal formalities, UAE authorities approved his extradition and handed him over to a Delhi Police escort team. The team returned to New Delhi with the fugitive on Wednesday.
The CBI, India’s National Central Bureau for INTERPOL, coordinates international police cooperation through BHARATPOL. Since 2019, more than 278 wanted criminals have been brought back to India through coordination between Indian agencies and foreign law enforcement authorities, the agency said.
