Former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has accused the BJP of organising nationwide marches and demonstrations to divert public attention from allegations of vote theft and irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
In a statement, Gehlot questioned the BJP’s decision to deploy Union Ministers, Chief Ministers and state ministers for the protests, asking whether the governments at the Centre and in the states had no other work to do.
“For the first time in India’s 80-year democratic history, the country is witnessing a ‘ruling Opposition’, a party that is itself in power staging sit-ins, demonstrations and marches against the Opposition,” he said, describing the BJP’s marches as pointless.
Gehlot claimed that people were facing severe hardships due to inflation, unemployment and corruption, and alleged that the BJP had panicked following allegations of vote theft and collusion by the Election Commission.
Referring to the INDIA Bloc’s march and mega rally, he said the Opposition’s campaign was being conducted peacefully and in a disciplined manner at designated protest sites. He also praised Rahul Gandhi for advocating love, affection and democratic methods to bring about a change in government.
“Despite this, the BJP is taking out such marches in an attempt to vitiate the atmosphere in the country,” Gehlot alleged.
His remarks come amid an intensifying political confrontation between the BJP and Opposition parties over allegations of electoral irregularities and the functioning of the Election Commission.
