Graphic design platform Canva will eliminate 1,271 jobs, representing around 22 per cent of its global workforce, as part of a major restructuring aimed at simplifying operations and preparing the company for its next phase of growth.
Chief Executive Officer and Co-founder Melanie Perkins announced the decision in a note to employees published on the company’s official website on Wednesday, describing it as the most difficult moment in Canva’s 13-year history.
The overhaul follows months of deliberations and comes amid slowing business growth and rapid technological changes that are transforming customer expectations and product development.
Perkins said Canva’s growth had slowed for the first time in a decade, making incremental organisational adjustments inadequate. The company now intends to reorganise itself around smaller, more empowered teams with broader responsibilities.
The restructuring will involve job eliminations, role changes and relocations to centralised hubs. Canva plans to bring its product, growth and platform functions together under a single product organisation, while reducing specialised roles and management layers.
Sydney will become the primary hub for more product teams. Employees working under hybrid arrangements will also be expected to spend two to three days a week in the office from January, according to Perkins.
The company has announced a support package for departing employees that includes at least six months’ salary, continued healthcare coverage where applicable, career transition assistance and extended employee support services.
Eligible departing staff will also have an opportunity to receive a $10,000 grant through the newly launched Canva Collective Fund.
Perkins said the changes were intended to keep Canva competitive over the coming decade, while acknowledging the personal impact of the decision on employees leaving the company.
