Washington, November 4, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Indian-American candidates registered significant victories in the US midterm elections, securing congressional and state-level positions across the country, while Democrat Dr Amish Shah maintained a strong lead in a closely watched House contest in Arizona.

Among the projected winners were Pia Dandiya in Florida, Suhas Subramanyam in Virginia, Pramila Jayapal in Washington state, Ro Khanna in California and Maryland Lieutenant Governor Aruna Miller. Several Indian-American candidates also won state legislative contests, while some remained ahead as vote counting continued.

Dandiya defeated Republican Casey Askar in Florida’s 22nd Congressional District, securing approximately 52 per cent of the vote against his 48 per cent. Her victory adds another Indian-American woman to the US House of Representatives.

In Virginia, Democratic Congressman Suhas Subramanyam won re-election from the 10th Congressional District, defeating Republican Dave Beckwith. “The campaign is over, but the work is just beginning,” he said, expressing his commitment to delivering change in Washington.

Maryland Lieutenant Governor Aruna Miller secured another four-year term after Democratic Governor Wes Moore won re-election.

On the West Coast, Pramila Jayapal was projected to retain Washington state’s 7th Congressional District, while Ro Khanna won re-election in California’s 17th District, defeating Republican Ritesh Tandon.

In another California contest, incumbent Congressman Ami Bera was leading Republican Robb Tucker by approximately 60 per cent to 40 per cent in the redrawn 3rd District, though the race had not been called.

In Arizona’s 1st Congressional District, physician and former state legislator Amish Shah was leading Republican Jay Feely with 54.9 per cent against 43.2 per cent, with around 76 per cent of the expected vote counted. No winner had been projected.

The biggest setbacks for prominent Indian-American candidates came in Ohio, where Democrat Amy Acton defeated Trump-backed Vivek Ramaswamy in the governor’s race, and New York, where Republican Saritha Komatireddy lost the attorney general contest to incumbent Letitia James.

Other Indian-American candidates who lost included Republican Mahesh Ganorkar in North Carolina and independents Sandeep Dixit in Ohio and Anil Kumar in Michigan.

At the state legislative level, Democrat Arvind Venkat won re-election in Pennsylvania’s House District 30, while Ram Villivalam retained Illinois Senate District 8.

In Illinois, Nabeela Syed led Republican incumbent Darby Hills by approximately 57 per cent to 43 per cent, with more than 95 per cent of estimated votes counted. In Georgia, Jyot Singh was ahead of Republican Yassin Moghazy in House District 97. Democrat Pooja Sethi also declared victory in Texas House District 47.

The November 3 midterm elections will determine control of the 435-member House of Representatives, 35 Senate seats, governorships and state legislatures. The results will offer a significant political assessment midway through President Donald Trump’s second term.
