The Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) has accused the Centre and the Maharashtra government of failing to maintain law and order, citing visuals of actor Amitabh Bachchan greeting fans from behind a bulletproof glass enclosure as an indication of growing security concerns.
In an editorial published in the party mouthpiece Saamana on Wednesday, the Uddhav Thackeray-led faction targeted Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, questioning the government’s ability to protect celebrities, business owners and ordinary citizens from criminal threats.
The editorial referred to the 84-year-old actor’s weekly appearance outside his Juhu residence, Jalsa, where he was seen greeting fans from behind bulletproof glass amid reported security concerns.
It also cited recent firing incidents near actor Tiger Shroff’s vehicle and extortion threats against bullion traders in Nagpur to argue that fear was spreading among prominent personalities and business communities.
The party questioned how criminal networks, particularly the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, continued to operate despite the authorities’ claims of strong action against organised crime.
The editorial alleged that restrictions on state police forces seeking custody of Bishnoi, who is lodged in Gujarat’s Sabarmati Jail, had weakened efforts to tackle the network. It claimed that the arrangement effectively provided the jailed gangster protection from action by other state police agencies.
Targeting the ruling leadership’s claims on national security and its political rallies, the editorial argued that citizens should not have to depend on specialised security arrangements to feel safe.
“How many citizens can the state furnish with specialised defence shields?” it asked, contrasting the security provided to political leaders with the concerns faced by business owners, builders and public figures.
The editorial also demanded Amit Shah’s resignation, holding the Union Home Minister and the Maharashtra government politically accountable for what it described as a deteriorating security situation.
The allegations and criticism form part of the opposition party’s attack on the ruling establishment over recent security-related incidents in the state.
