Qatar said on Tuesday that the United States and Iran were reviewing proposals aimed at ending their conflict, but significant differences remained unresolved despite ongoing diplomatic efforts.
“Bridging the gap is still a work in progress,” Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesperson Majed Al Ansari said at the ministry’s weekly briefing, confirming that both sides were examining proposals and ideas put forward by mediators.
Al Ansari said a Qatari delegation returned from Tehran on Monday evening after more than three hours of discussions with Iranian officials, exceeding the scheduled one-hour meeting. The talks involved exchanging views and proposals to narrow differences between Washington and Tehran, Xinhua News Agency reported.
He cautioned against treating the continued engagement as a breakthrough, saying no concrete progress could yet be announced. Qatar was working towards an interim agreement to build confidence between the two sides and pave the way for further negotiations and a lasting settlement.
Al Ansari said confidence-building measures should be part of a phased diplomatic process, with both sides demonstrating commitment by implementing agreed steps.
Commenting on the incident involving Qatari liquefied natural gas carrier Al Mayeda in the Arabian Gulf, he reiterated Qatar’s condemnation of the attack and opposition to threats against freedom of maritime navigation.
He added that Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries were coordinating diplomatic efforts to prevent further escalation, warning that renewed hostilities would serve no one’s interests.
Al Ansari expressed hope that continued engagement would produce an agreement to end the crisis and create conditions for lasting regional peace.
