As many as 23 Indian nationals, including 15 seafarers, have lost their lives in the ongoing West Asia conflict, while five Indians have died in attacks on commercial shipping in the Black Sea region, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Tuesday.
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said one more Indian national died after a ship carrying 14 Indian crew members came under attack off the Oman coast on Monday. Thirteen others were rescued, and India is working to bring them back home.
“Out of those 22 Indian nationals, we have 14 Indian seafarers and today we have lost one more, yesterday that is, which means there are 23 Indian nationals which we have lost in the conflict in West Asia. Out of which 15 of them are Indian seafarers,” Jaiswal said.
He thanked Omani authorities for rescuing the 13 crew members and said arrangements were being made to repatriate them and bring back the mortal remains of the deceased Indian national.
India condemned the attack on commercial vessel MSV AL JUSUFI near Limah, Oman, and conveyed condolences over the loss of life. The Indian Embassy in Oman is coordinating with local authorities for the repatriation process.
Jaiswal reiterated India’s call for dialogue and diplomacy to restore peace and stability in the region. He also stressed that freedom of navigation through international waterways must be restored and guaranteed.
Regarding attacks on commercial shipping in the Black Sea region, Jaiswal said five Indian nationals had died, while two others remained missing.
The MEA expressed concern over continued attacks on commercial vessels and called for immediate de-escalation, an early diplomatic solution and an end to the targeting of commercial shipping and civilian infrastructure.
