Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday said the Narendra Modi government was ready for a detailed discussion on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, even through a special session of Parliament, but accused the Congress of preventing the House from functioning.
Addressing the closing ceremony of the Chhattisgarh Rajyotsav, Shah challenged the Opposition, particularly Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, to participate in a proper parliamentary debate instead of disrupting proceedings and organising mock Parliament sessions.
“If you have the courage, come forward and engage in a proper debate. Simply carrying a copy of the Constitution does not equate to upholding it — one’s conduct must be constitutional,” Shah said.
He alleged that the Congress had brought Parliament to a standstill and urged the party to allow proceedings so that people could judge who was speaking the truth.
Shah said the government had nothing to hide and was open to scrutiny on the SIR exercise and other electoral issues raised by the Opposition. He maintained that democratic debate should take place inside Parliament rather than through parallel platforms or street protests.
His remarks come amid Opposition protests over the SIR exercise and allegations of large-scale voter deletions.
