Gresini Racing rider Alex Marquez on Tuesday confirmed that he has undergone surgery on his right shoulder, which has troubled him since a crash in May. The Spaniard will miss the upcoming Qatar Grand Prix as he begins his recovery.
Sharing a picture from a hospital in Madrid, Marquez said the surgery was performed at Ruber Internacional Hospital.
“Yesterday I underwent surgery at the Ruber Internacional Hospital in Madrid to remove osteosynthesis material from my right collarbone and left hand. Additionally, during the same surgical procedure, they performed an arthroscopic bursectomy on my right shoulder,” he wrote on Instagram.
He explained that doctors removed the plates and fixation elements from his collarbone and hand, along with a small sac in the shoulder that helps prevent friction between tendons and the joint.
Marquez said the procedure went without complications and that he had begun his recovery at home. He thanked Dr Samuel Antuna and the medical team, describing the surgery as another step towards returning to full fitness.
He is targeting a comeback at the Portugal Grand Prix on November 22. Marquez recently finished third at the Malaysian Grand Prix behind his brother Marc Marquez and Pedro Acosta, after crashing out of the sprint race despite starting from pole position.
The Spaniard is currently eighth in the 2026 riders’ championship with 197 points, one race victory and three podium finishes. This is in contrast to his 2025 campaign, when he finished runner-up to Marc with 467 points, three wins and 12 podiums.
