AISA president Neha Bora has faced criticism from NDA leaders over her remarks on the “Brahmanical system” and religious institutions, with BJP and Shiv Sena leaders accusing her of targeting Sanatan Dharma and questioning the platform extended to her by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.
BJP national spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari criticised Bora’s comments on social media platform X, alleging that they reflected the influence of Rahul Gandhi and accusing the Congress of hostility towards Hindus.
BJP spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain, speaking to IANS, accused Bora of repeatedly making objectionable remarks against Sanatan Dharma and its followers. He alleged that her comments targeted a particular religious community.
BJP spokesperson Guru Prakash Paswan questioned Bora’s references to jailed activists Sharjeel Imam and Umar Khalid. He also criticised Rahul Gandhi for allegedly giving her a platform, asking why the Congress leader was supporting someone who had described the Constitution as a fascist document.
Shiv Sena leader Anand Dubey also criticised Bora’s remarks, referring to her father’s reported disagreement with her views. He objected to her comments concerning temples and priests, alleging that Hindu religious institutions were being singled out while mosques and churches were not being discussed in the same manner.
Bihar Minister Santosh Suman said Bora’s remarks reflected the ideological influence under which she had been shaped. He described temples as places of faith for millions of people and criticised comments targeting religious institutions.
The controversy followed Bora’s remarks while extending support to an impeachment resolution against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. She raised concerns about caste-based discrimination and the role of religious institutions, arguing that women and vulnerable sections needed protection from what she described as the “Brahmanical system”.
“Protection is absolutely necessary – and it is precisely from the Brahmanical system that such protection is required. This is a system which posits that the poor, the oppressed, animals and women are all deserving of subjugation and abuse. It is the very same system under which even Brahmin women are unsafe and fall victim to rape. Priests commit rapes inside temples. We have witnessed such instances…” Bora said.
