Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei has directed the country’s armed forces to respond “immediately and effectively” to any threat from its enemies, regardless of its nature or geographical location, according to a statement published on his official website on Saturday.
Khamenei issued the directive during a meeting with senior commanders of the Iranian armed forces, including Chief of Staff Ali Abdollahi, Army Chief Commander Amir Hatami and Islamic Revolution Guard Corps Commander-in-Chief Ahmad Vahidi.
He said that if Iran’s enemies resumed military or terrorist attacks against the country, the Iranian armed forces and people would determine the timing and conditions for ending the conflict, Xinhua news agency reported.
The Supreme Leader also stressed the need to strengthen Iran’s military intelligence architecture, develop indigenous defence doctrines and tactics, and enhance modern defence and security capabilities using advanced technologies.
He further directed that Iran’s target bank be updated to bring various tangible and intangible assets of the “US-Israeli enemy” within the reach of Iranian armed forces.
During the meeting, senior military commanders presented reports on the armed forces’ operational readiness. They also briefed Khamenei on a significant increase in domestic production of ammunition, reconnaissance equipment, support systems and combat weaponry.
Khamenei’s remarks come amid heightened US threats of military action against Iran.
The Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday, citing people familiar with the discussions, that the United States had asked several Gulf countries to prepare for a brief but intense military campaign against Iran following the US midterm elections.
The report also said that the United States and Israel were preparing for another round of intense military operations against Iran.
On February 28, Israel and the United States launched joint attacks on Tehran and other Iranian cities. Iran retaliated with waves of missile and drone strikes targeting Israel and US bases and assets across the region, while also tightening its grip on the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.
