Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday accused Opposition parties of abandoning their democratic responsibility of questioning the government and instead becoming an “avrodh paksh” (obstructionist Opposition), alleging that their approach was creating hurdles in the country’s development.

Addressing the Rashtriya Ekta Diwas gathering at Ekta Nagar in Gujarat on the 151st birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Modi said the Constitution recognised the roles of both the ruling party and the Opposition in a democracy.

Invoking the contributions of Patel and B.R. Ambedkar to the constitutional framework, the Prime Minister said the Opposition was expected to question government policies but had, in his view, moved away from that responsibility.

“In a democracy, the responsibility of the Opposition is to oppose the government’s policies. But it is our misfortune that, at present, the Opposition in the country has abandoned its duty and, instead of being the Opposition, has become an obstructionist Opposition,” Modi said.

He alleged that frustration and disappointment had led Opposition parties to obstruct development rather than engage in democratic dissent.

“This is not opposition; this is obstruction. They have made it their politics,” he said, accusing them of disregarding constitutional propriety.

The Prime Minister also stressed the importance of national unity at a time when several parts of the world were facing conflicts, resource shortages and disruptions in global supply chains.

He said unity was essential for India’s stability and progress, particularly amid international uncertainty and economic challenges.

Modi further alleged that some forces within the country had attempted to create instability by spreading falsehoods and rumours while India was dealing with external challenges. He said citizens had stood together with the nation during that period.

Urging people to remain alert to attempts to divide society, he cautioned against the use of social media to spread misinformation and damage India’s image.

He called for collective efforts to safeguard national unity and said the country would continue pursuing its development objectives despite attempts to create obstacles.

Modi reiterated the government’s goal of building a developed India by 2047, when the country will complete 100 years of Independence.
