Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri received a warm welcome from BJP leaders and party workers on his arrival at Raja Bhoj Airport in Bhopal ahead of the November 12 Rajya Sabha by-election in Madhya Pradesh.
A large gathering of party workers and functionaries greeted Puri at the airport on Friday evening. Those present included Madhya Pradesh Minister of State Narendra Shivaji Patel and former state BJP president VD Sharma, along with other senior leaders.
In a post on X, Puri described the reception as warm and enthusiastic and thanked the party workers and leaders for welcoming him to the state capital.
The visit comes after the BJP’s central election committee named Puri as its candidate for the Rajya Sabha by-election. The contest has been necessitated by the resignation of former Union Minister L. Murugan, who stepped down from the Upper House to focus on organisational responsibilities in Tamil Nadu.
Puri is currently a Rajya Sabha member from Uttar Pradesh, where his term is due to end on November 25. A former diplomat and administrator, he holds the Petroleum and Natural Gas portfolio in the Union Cabinet.
The BJP has a clear numerical advantage in the 230-member Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly, which will elect the representative to the vacant Rajya Sabha seat. The party’s strength gives its candidate a favourable position in the by-election.
Puri’s arrival marks the start of his engagement with the Madhya Pradesh BJP unit ahead of the nomination process and polling. He is expected to meet party legislators and functionaries as the election approaches.
