National Conference (NC) MP Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi on Friday launched a sharp attack on the Abdullah family of Jammu and Kashmir, accusing it of treating the region as a family “estate” and failing to honour promises made to the people.

“The crown prince and his cabal treat J&K as an estate passed down through the family. They expect the people to vote, then know their place,” Ruhullah posted on X, reiterating that he would resign from the National Conference and his Lok Sabha seat on November 3.

The Srinagar MP accused the Abdullah family of underestimating the public and assuming that people could not distinguish between broken promises and political necessity.

“Ask them to honour their own manifesto, and they lecture us on how little we understand realpolitik,” he said.

Ruhullah also reiterated his demands for the restoration of Article 370, the release of prisoners and the protection of people’s rights.

“They (Abdullahs) sought power on those promises, then treated us as fools for expecting them to deliver. We refuse to lend our name to this humiliation. There is no fixing this rot from within,” he said.

Targeting National Conference president Farooq Abdullah and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Ruhullah also cited verse 17:24 of Surah Al-Isra from the Holy Quran, stating, “Honour your pledges, for you will surely be accountable for them.”

The NC MP said he had won the Srinagar Lok Sabha seat on the basis of promises made to the people and would not continue to hold it if those commitments were betrayed.

“I will surrender it (Srinagar seat) rather than make myself an accomplice to that promise’s betrayal,” he said.

Ruhullah announced that he would address the public at Behshit-e-Zehra Park in Budgam on November 3 and urged people to join the programme.

The rift between Ruhullah and the National Conference stems from his opposition to the abrogation of Article 370, a position that has clashed with the party leadership’s more pragmatic political approach.

Ruhullah distanced himself from what he described as the party’s silence following the August 2019 developments and resigned as its chief spokesperson in 2020.

Tensions escalated after the 2024 elections, when he openly accused the NC of abandoning the struggle for constitutional rights and “begging” New Delhi for statehood.

The feud intensified after Farooq Abdullah challenged him to resign. Ruhullah subsequently declined to campaign in the Budgam bypoll, further widening the rift before announcing his decision to quit the party and the Lok Sabha on November 3.
