Punjabi singer-actor Diljit Dosanjh addressed the controversy surrounding his decision to stay away from the Cockroach Janata Party’s (CJP) protest in Delhi, telling critics not to teach Punjabis how to fight for a cause during the opening concert of his Aura India Tour on Friday.
The singer’s remarks came amid criticism over his earlier response, “I’m an artist, bro”, which had drawn objections from CJP members, including party leader Abhijeet Dipke. The controversy also involved the alleged mocking of Satluj, Diljit’s film based on the life of human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra.
Addressing the audience at the Delhi concert, Diljit said he loved everyone and wanted to be allowed to remain silent if he chose not to comment on an issue.
“I love all of you because I am an artist, bro. I am being quiet, so let me stay quiet. I support all of you. But don’t teach Punjabis how to fight,” he said.
He also defended the effort that had gone into making the Khalra biographical film, saying the team had fought for a long time to bring the project to fruition. He added that even if some people disliked him, he continued to wish them well.
During an Instagram Live session, Diljit also said he was not bothered by attempts to create negativity around him.
Responding to the singer’s concert remarks, Dipke posted a lengthy note on social media addressed to “Diljit Paaji”. He said Diljit’s earlier comment during the June protest had hurt him, not because of any personal hostility, but because he had regarded the singer as someone who stood up for causes.
Dipke described himself as an admirer of Diljit and recalled attending his Chicago concert in May. He praised the singer for taking Indian music and culture to a global audience while remaining connected to his roots.
He clarified that the disagreement had not changed his respect and admiration for Diljit, urging him to put the misunderstanding aside.
