Four people were killed and two others seriously injured after a major fire broke out at a shoe factory in Delhi’s Mangolpuri Industrial Area, officials said on Saturday.
The fire erupted in the basement of the factory in Phase-I of the industrial area at around 9.30 pm on Friday. Police, fire brigade teams and emergency response personnel rushed to the site after receiving information about the incident.
Firefighters battled the blaze for several hours before rescuing six people from inside the premises. All six were found unconscious and taken to Sanjay Gandhi Hospital, where four were declared brought dead. The two survivors remain under treatment.
Phase-I DCP (Outer District) Vikram Singh said police personnel reached the factory as first responders and began rescue efforts after fire tenders arrived. He said the operation continued for a considerable period and that legal proceedings had been initiated.
The cause of the fire has not yet been established. Singh said investigators were examining how the blaze started, adding that it was known so far only that the fire had broken out in the basement.
Rakesh Bhardwaj of the Central Accident and Trauma Service (CATS) said the agency received the emergency call at 9.50 pm. All five ambulances stationed together were dispatched and reached the location within five to seven minutes.
CATS personnel transported around six people to Sanjay Gandhi Hospital for treatment.
Police have launched an investigation into the incident. Further details, including the circumstances that led to the fire, are awaited.
