Elon Musk has contributed $446 million to influence the 2026 US midterm elections, making him the biggest individual donor in modern American political history, as the 50 largest contributors have poured approximately $2.8 billion into the electoral contest, according to a Washington Post tracker based on Federal Election Commission (FEC) data.
The Brennan Center for Justice puts Musk’s contributions at $483 million when donations from his company, United States of America Inc., are included. It said the amount exceeds the contributions made by any donor in a single election cycle.
All figures are rounded, and FEC data is self-reported by political committees, which can amend their filings.
According to The Washington Post, most of Musk’s contributions went to his own America PAC, which received approximately $216 million, followed by the Senate Leadership Fund with $168 million and the Congressional Leadership Fund with $30 million.
Among other major individual donors, Elizabeth and Richard Uihlein contributed $150 million, Jeff and Janine Yass gave $110 million, George Soros contributed $102 million, Ben Horowitz and Marc Andreessen gave $92 million, and Mike Bloomberg contributed $84 million.
Completing the top 10 individual donors were Miriam Adelson, with $68 million; Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, with $56 million; Paul Singer, with $54 million; and OpenAI President Greg Brockman and his wife, Anna, with $50 million.
Republican-leaning donors accounted for approximately $1.7 billion, or 60 per cent, of the contributions from the top 50 donors. Democratic-leaning donors contributed around $830 million, or 30 per cent, according to The Washington Post and Al Jazeera.
The Brennan Center found that the 40 largest donors had contributed $2.4 billion by mid-October, eight times the amount given by the top 40 donors at the same point in 2014 after adjusting for inflation.
“In 2014, the top 40 favoured Democrats two to one,” the Brennan Center said, adding that donors aligned with the Republican Party “now give more than three times the amount that reliably Democratic donors give.”
According to OpenSecrets, the top 100 donors accounted for 64 per cent of all spending by outside groups.
FEC filings show that the Senate Leadership Fund had raised approximately $546 million and MAGA Inc. around $449 million by October 14. In comparison, the Republican National Committee had raised approximately $342 million.
The composition of political funding has also changed. Cryptocurrency interests contributed $304 million among the top 40 donors, while labour groups no longer featured among the top 40, the Brennan Center said.
The centre also found that dark-money groups accounted for 29 per cent of contributions from the top 40 donors, up from 17 per cent in 2014.
Political advertising expenditure is projected to reach approximately $11.6 billion, making the 2026 midterm cycle more expensive than any previous election cycle, including the 2024 presidential race, Al Jazeera reported, citing advertising-tracking firm AdImpact.
Al Jazeera quoted Harvard Law Professor Lawrence Lessig as saying, “The problem isn’t the spending. The problem is the concentration of donors.”
The US midterm elections are scheduled for November 3.
