Hollywood filmmaker James Gunn has cast doubt on whether actress Margot Robbie will reprise her role as Harley Quinn in future DC films, suggesting that she “may be over” playing the character.
Gunn, 60, who also heads DC Studios, recently discussed the character’s future during an appearance on The Suicide Squad: Is It Canon? The Official Podcast.
“That settles it then. I think that The Suicide Squad is within the canon of the DCU. It’s decided. I’d say, we have one small asterisk, which is what exactly is the future of Harley Quinn? I want to be given a little leeway with this by the fans because I’m not sure exactly how that’s going to manifest itself. But other than that, I think that we can pretty much say the entire movie is canon. I don’t think there’s a problem,” Gunn said.
The 36-year-old Robbie portrayed Harley Quinn in 2016’s Suicide Squad and 2020’s Birds of Prey. However, Gunn’s comments have raised questions about whether she will return to the role in another film.
The filmmaker noted that Robbie has become the “biggest female star in the world” since making her debut as Harley Quinn.
Despite being a major admirer of the actress’s portrayal, Gunn admitted that he was unsure whether she wanted to continue playing the character.
“She’s just so crazy. I love her as Harley. I don’t know if she wants to play Harley again. She may be over that,” he said.
This is not the first time Gunn has made headlines over casting decisions involving established characters in the DC cinematic universe.
His appointment at DC Studios has been accompanied by controversy, particularly over the decision to pass the Superman role from Henry Cavill to David Corenswet.
