Two-time Paralympic medallist Manish Narwal secured India’s second shooting medal at the Asian Para Games, winning silver in the men’s 10m Air Pistol SH1 event and earning a quota place for the 2028 Los Angeles Paralympics on Tuesday.
Narwal produced a score of 233.7 in the eight-shooter final to finish second behind South Korea’s Jeongdu Jo, who claimed gold with a Games-record 241.3.
India’s Rudransh Khandelwal finished seventh with 127.3 in the final.
Narwal had entered the final after finishing fifth in qualification with 570-15x, while Khandelwal was second with 571-21x. Another Indian, Nihal Singh, missed the final after finishing 12th in qualification with 560-9x.
The silver adds to Narwal’s growing Paralympic record. He won silver in the men’s 10m Air Pistol SH1 event at the Paris 2024 Paralympics. At Tokyo 2020, he became the first Indian male shooter to win a Paralympic gold medal when he triumphed in the mixed SH1 50m pistol event.
The SH1 sport class in pistol events is meant for athletes with upper and/or lower limb impairments.
India also had two shooters qualify for the women’s 10m Air Pistol SH1 final. Sumedha Pathak topped qualification with 561-18x, while Shrishti Arora finished fifth with 560-8x.
Paris 2024 Paralympic bronze medallist Rubina Francis narrowly missed the final after finishing 10th in qualification with 558-16x.
The Indian shooting contingent had already made a strong start to the Games on Monday, when Mona Agarwal won gold in the women’s 10m Air Rifle Standing SH1. She set a new Asian Para Games record with 250.0, while two-time Paralympic champion Avani Lekhara took silver with 249.6, giving India its first one-two finish of the Games.
India entered the Aichi-Nagoya Games on the back of its most successful Asian Para Games campaign in Hangzhou in 2023, where it won a record 111 medals, including 29 gold, 31 silver and 51 bronze, to finish fifth in the overall standings.
