Quetta, October 18, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

A powerful earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale struck Khuzdar district and adjoining areas of Pakistan’s Balochistan province on Saturday, killing one person and damaging several traditional mud houses, according to local media reports on Sunday.

Officials said the tremors were felt at around 10:07 a.m. local time on Saturday, prompting residents to leave their homes and take shelter in open areas.

According to the National Seismic Monitoring Centre of the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) in Islamabad, the earthquake’s epicentre was located 48 kilometres northwest of Khuzdar, at a depth of 25 kilometres, Pakistan’s Dawn newspaper reported.

“One person was killed after a large rock fell from a mountain in the Naal area,” officials said.

The victim, identified as Abdul Rahim, a resident of Wadh, was struck by a rock that fell from a nearby mountain in Anari, in the Besar area of Naal. He died at the scene, according to the report.

The latest earthquake highlights Pakistan’s vulnerability to seismic activity. The country lies near the boundary between the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, making it susceptible to earthquakes.

Earlier, on June 27, an earthquake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale struck Pakistan, according to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS). However, an NCS statement cited in reports gave the magnitude as 5.3 and said the quake occurred at a depth of 75 kilometres. Tremors were felt across several regions, with no immediate reports of casualties or structural damage.

In April, an earthquake measuring 5.5 struck Afghanistan’s Hindu Kush region, sending tremors across Islamabad, Peshawar and several parts of Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, according to local media reports.

The PMD’s National Seismic Monitoring Centre reported that the earthquake occurred at a depth of 199 kilometres. Pakistan’s Geo TV reported that tremors were felt in Swat, Hangu, North Waziristan and Chitral, while residents of Rawalpindi also experienced shaking.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage from that earthquake, and the epicentre was reported to be in the Hindu Kush region.
