A stall operator has been booked after an electrocution incident near a Ganesh festival pandal in Mumbai’s Lalbaug area left two people dead, including an eight-year-old girl, and four others seriously injured early Sunday.
The incident took place around 2 a.m. near a Pepsi-Cola stall close to Aastha Hospital on Dattaram Lad Marg in Kalachowki, when devotees were present near the pandal.
According to the fire brigade, five people, including two boys and three girls aged between eight and 20, came into contact with an electrical current from a loose wire and suffered burn injuries.
All five victims were rushed to Masina Hospital in Byculla. Doctors declared eight-year-old Raghni Ghanshyam Yadav dead on arrival.
Another victim, identified as 33-year-old Sujata Thorati, was admitted to Global Hospital in Parel, where she later succumbed to her injuries.
Police have registered an FIR at Kalachowki Police Station against nearby stall operator Kamal Shetty under Sections 106(1) and 125(b) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, alleging negligence. An investigation is underway.
The FIR stated that the loose wire allegedly came into contact with Raghni and other people nearby.
Four injured victims — Kiran Akbar Naik, 19, Tanvi Narsh Hande, 19, Sahil Sandip Tare, 19, and Ruhi Singh, 12 — are undergoing treatment.
One of the injured girls was reportedly in critical condition and was shifted to Global Hospital in Parel for further treatment. The remaining three victims are being treated in the intensive care unit at Masina Hospital, where their condition remains serious.
