The Delhi Police have traced and recovered a minor girl from Bihar eight years after she went missing from the national capital, officials said on Sunday.
The Anti-Human Trafficking Unit (AHTU) of Delhi Police’s Central District recovered the girl from Shahpur Patori in Samastipur district, bringing an end to a long-pending missing-person case registered at Anand Parbat police station.
The case dates back to October 14, 2018, when an FIR was registered regarding the alleged disappearance and kidnapping of the girl, who was 14 years old at the time and lived in Delhi’s Anand Parbat area.
Following the registration of the case, police conducted extensive searches to trace her. The AHTU team examined footage from multiple CCTV cameras and searched around 90 girls’ shelter homes, 52 orphanages, religious places and red-light areas across Delhi-NCR.
Despite sustained efforts over the years, the girl’s whereabouts could not initially be established. The AHTU, however, continued pursuing available leads in the case.
A few months ago, the team received secret information that the girl might be in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. A dedicated team comprising Sub-Inspector Raj Bahadur Singh, Head Constable Surender and Woman Constable Manisha was formed to trace her.
The team worked under the supervision of Inspector Anil Yadav, In-charge of AHTU, with overall supervision by the ACP, DIU.
The police team travelled to Kanpur and searched the location identified through the source. However, officers learnt that the girl had been moved from the spot shortly before their arrival.
The team continued searching surrounding areas and developed additional local sources. Subsequent information suggested that the girl could be residing in Samastipur district of Bihar.
Acting on the lead, the AHTU team travelled to Samastipur on September 15. Through technical surveillance, field verification and ground-level efforts, the team narrowed down her location to Shahpur Patori.
The police subsequently conducted a search operation in the area and recovered the girl from Patori with the assistance of local police.
She was brought back to Delhi on September 17 and underwent a medical examination. She was subsequently counselled, and her statement was recorded under Section 183 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS).
After completing the required legal and procedural formalities, the girl was handed over to her parents, resulting in her reunion with her family after eight years.
