Actress Rasika Dugal has opened up on why audiences connected so strongly with her character Beena Tripathi in the popular series ‘Mirzapur’, describing the character as complex, layered and driven by her own ambitions.
Speaking exclusively to IANS, Rasika said Beena was written with considerable depth and that her ability to reclaim her agency after every setback was one of the aspects she particularly appreciated about the character.
Asked whether Beena was special enough to explain her strong connect with audiences, Rasika said, “I think this character has been written very well and with a lot of complexity and layers. Here is a woman who is strategic and vulnerable, who is desirous and desirable. Very often, we do not write women characters like this.”
“I think Beena is written with a lot of complexity, and what I really like about her is the way she reclaims her agency every time in the story,” she added.
Beena has survived within an extremely patriarchal and violent household while also using manipulation and power politics to navigate her circumstances. Asked whether she viewed the character as a feminist, anti-hero or simply a survivor, Rasika described her primarily as a survivor.
“She does those things for survival. You are right that she is very intelligent and clever. She knows what her weaknesses are and how to use them to her advantage,” Rasika said.
“So, I feel that she is definitely a survivor, and she has her own ambitions,” she added.
Rasika’s portrayal of Beena Tripathi has been a prominent part of the ‘Mirzapur’ franchise, with the character navigating power, vulnerability and survival within its violent world.
The cinematic adaptation of the popular series, ‘Mirzapur: The Movie’, was released in theatres on September 4 and received a positive response from audiences.
