Several CPI-M party offices were vandalised and the house and party office of former Trinamool Congress MLA Debrabrata Majumdar were allegedly attacked by unidentified miscreants on motorbikes in south Kolkata’s Jadavpur area, police said on Sunday.
CPI-M offices were targeted in six wards of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation area — wards 96, 99, 101, 102, 105 and 106. The party alleged that its flags were pulled down and thrown to the ground during the attacks.
The house and office of Majumdar, a long-time KMC councillor from ward 96 and former Trinamool MLA, were also allegedly attacked. Some of his family members were reportedly assaulted.
The identities and affiliations of those involved in the attacks remain unclear.
According to a CPI-M leader, tensions were particularly high in ward 96, where Majumdar’s residence and party office are located. The CPI-M’s martyrs’ altar in the ward was also allegedly vandalised.
The miscreants allegedly threatened Majumdar’s elder brother and pushed him to the ground. The family said they repeatedly contacted the police and informed them about the incident, alleging that the police arrived about an hour later.
Unrest was also reported in wards 101 and 105, where fights allegedly broke out. Tension was also reported at the office of former Trinamool councillor Tarun Mandal. Local sources said police personnel intervened with batons, preventing the situation from escalating further.
The alleged bike gang has reportedly been creating disturbances not only in Jadavpur but also in Narendrapur in South 24 Parganas district.
Following the incidents, both the CPI-M and Trinamool Congress questioned the role of the police and alleged BJP involvement. The BJP has not commented on the allegations so far.
Majumdar alleged that around 100 people arrived at his residence, vandalised the house and abused and pushed his elder brother. He claimed they were BJP supporters.
A CPI-M worker also alleged that the attackers tore party flags, abused workers and warned them against coming to the area, claiming that those involved were BJP supporters who had earlier been associated with the Trinamool Congress.
The latest incidents come days after several CPI-M offices were vandalised in the Bali area of Howrah district on September 15. The Left had blamed the BJP, while the BJP denied the allegation.
The Dewangazi Zonal Party Office on Panchanantala Road and another CPI-M office on Belur Station Road were among those reportedly vandalised.
Last Friday, the CPI-M also alleged that its party office in Kodalia, ward 20 of Rajpur-Sonarpur Municipality in South 24 Parganas district, was attacked and blamed the BJP for the incident.
