Russia on Friday summoned Britain’s charge d’affaires in Moscow, Danae Dholakia, over what the Russian Foreign Ministry described as an increase in the supply of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and other weapons systems to Ukraine.
According to a statement issued by the Russian Foreign Ministry, Moscow told the British diplomat that London’s policy on Ukraine was contributing to the prolongation and escalation of the conflict and was delaying prospects for a political settlement.
The ministry said it had raised concerns over Britain’s supply of long-range offensive weapons to Ukraine and accused London of becoming involved in what it described as atrocities committed by Ukrainian forces.
The Russian side also presented the British diplomat with a list of international obligations it alleged Britain was violating by supporting Kyiv. It warned of what Moscow called comprehensive risks arising from Britain’s “destructive actions” and argued that such measures would not alter what it described as the superiority of Russian armed forces.
The ministry said Russian forces continued to hold the strategic initiative in what Moscow calls its “special military operation” in Ukraine.
Russia also warned that it reserved the right to take what it described as necessary retaliatory measures under the right to self-defence.
“It was confirmed that any British facilities in Ukraine that are used to strike the Russian territory shall be considered a legitimate target,” the ministry said, adding that it would hold London responsible for any further deterioration in the situation.
The Russian Foreign Ministry urged Britain to abandon its current approach, which Moscow characterised as escalatory, and bring its actions into line with what Russia considers its relevant international obligations.
The summons comes amid continuing Western military support for Ukraine and heightened tensions between Moscow and London over weapons supplies and the conduct of the conflict.
