At least 15 people were killed and more than 50 injured in a blast near a mosque at the Police Lines area in Kohat district of Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on Friday, according to local officials and media reports.
District Headquarters Hospital Medical Superintendent Tahir Ali Shah said 15 bodies and more than 50 injured people were brought to the hospital following the explosion.
The blast occurred during Friday prayers and caused extensive damage to the mosque’s outer section, with a wall collapsing in the explosion. Police personnel were among those injured, while additional security forces were rushed to the Police Lines following the incident.
Later reports from Pakistani officials put the death toll at 16, including five police personnel, with more than 50 people injured. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa police said an explosives-laden vehicle was initially reported to have rammed into the gate of the old Police Lines.
Rescue teams were deployed at the site and continued operations to assist the injured and clear the affected area.
The blast comes amid heightened militant violence in Pakistan, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan.
On September 10, a police constable was killed and another seriously injured after unidentified assailants attacked a checkpost in Kank area of Mastung district in Balochistan, according to police. The attackers fled following an exchange of fire with security personnel, after which police and other security forces launched a search operation.
Separately, a monthly security assessment by the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS), cited by Dawn, recorded 199 terrorist attacks in Pakistan in August, compared with 144 in July. The August attacks reportedly killed 158 people and injured 181, while July saw 268 deaths and 216 injuries.
The situation at the Kohat Police Lines remains under investigation, with security forces continuing clearance and rescue operations.
