Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate an international conference on “The Future of Environment and Climate Dynamics” in Delhi on September 19, bringing together judicial representatives, environmental experts and policymakers to discuss key environmental and climate challenges.
The two-day conference is being organised by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) and will see the participation of eminent judges and judicial representatives from 17 countries.
According to an official statement, the conference will focus on challenges related to gaps in environmental policy formulation, implementation and enforcement. It will also provide a platform to exchange judicial approaches and environmental governance practices and explore ways to strengthen institutional cooperation.
Judges of the Supreme Court and High Courts, District Court judges, senior government officials, Secretaries of various ministries and representatives of State Judicial Academies and State Legal Services Authorities will also participate.
Representatives from State Expert Appraisal Committees (SEACs), State Environment Impact Assessment Authorities (SEIAAs), State Wetland Authorities and other stakeholders are also expected to attend.
The conference comes amid continued efforts to address environmental and climate-related challenges through coordinated governance and stronger institutional mechanisms.
Earlier, during an event marking the International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies, NGT Chairperson Justice (Retired) Prakash Shrivastava stressed the importance of clean air and said it should be treated as a fundamental need rather than a luxury.
Speaking at an event organised by the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change to mark Swachh Vayu Diwas 2026, Justice Shrivastava said development and environmental conservation could go together while maintaining citizens’ quality of life.
He also emphasised the responsibility of citizens to ensure that future generations are able to live in a clean environment.
Justice Shrivastava called for local bodies to focus on preventing pollution at its source, create greater public awareness, adopt the latest technologies and follow an inclusive “Whole of Society” approach to tackle air pollution.
Environment Secretary Tanmay Kumar said the government was adopting a multi-pronged, coordinated and scientific approach to tackling air pollution in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision.
During the event, the Environment Ministry also honoured the best-performing cities and wards under the National Clean Air Programme, based on rankings from the fifth Swachh Vayu Sarvekshan.
