Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has said the development of frontier artificial intelligence must be guided by the principle that AI should benefit humanity and remain under human control.
Amid the growing global debate over the impact of advanced AI systems, Nadella called for a deliberate approach to developing increasingly capable models while ensuring their benefits are widely distributed.
“Any pursuit of superintelligence has to be grounded in the core principle that if the AI we build is not helping humanity and under human control, it’s not worth pursuing,” Nadella said in a post on X.
He also argued that companies should retain control over their “unique and tacit knowledge” and be able to build continuous-learning systems without becoming dependent on a single AI provider.
Nadella said the benefits of AI should be accelerated and distributed across countries, communities and companies. He advocated a frontier AI ecosystem in which both closed and open-source models can develop.
“We also need to accelerate and spread the benefits of AI, such that they are diffused broadly across countries, communities, and companies,” he said.
The Microsoft chief welcomed research and “deliberate pacing” in AI development, saying alignment should be built into the technology as a design goal. He also backed measures such as “embedded evaluators” and broader efforts to develop mechanisms for keeping increasingly capable AI systems aligned with human interests.
Nadella stressed that advanced AI capabilities should not be controlled by a small number of entities, calling for broad representation across countries, fields and institutions, including academia.
He said Microsoft was prioritising broad access and choice across the AI stack, enterprise control over learning loops and models, and a “Code of Conduct” for its first-party MAI models, which the company plans to publish for public consultation.
His comments come amid wider calls for caution in advanced AI development. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei warned earlier in September that AI advances could outpace efforts to understand and control the technology.
