Following the collapse of a multi-storey building in Delhi’s Satya Niketan area, rescue teams on Sunday continued efforts to locate and evacuate people feared trapped under the debris.
Delhi Police said two people had been rescued so far, while the operation remained underway at the site.
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) RK Puram MLA Anil Kumar Sharma, who was monitoring the rescue operation, described the incident as “extremely tragic” and said several students staying in a paying guest (PG) accommodation inside the building were believed to be trapped.
“Children who came from various regions to study here and were residing in a PG accommodation… the building has collapsed,” Sharma told reporters at the spot.
He said authorities were unable to confirm the exact number of people trapped at this stage, but added that students were among those believed to be underneath the rubble.
“Just now, two children were pulled out, and teams from the disaster management forces, MCD, and the police department have rushed them to the hospital. Other children remain trapped inside,” he said.
Sharma further claimed that some students were making phone calls from beneath the debris, raising hopes that those trapped could be located and rescued.
He said Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta had directed the full emergency response team to reach the spot, while Delhi BJP chief and MP Harsh Malhotra was in constant contact with officials.
Local residents said the collapsed structure housed a PG accommodation and that several students, including women, were believed to be inside.
One resident claimed that around 20 to 30 students could be trapped, though the figure had not been officially confirmed.
