Iran is ready to establish joint security arrangements with neighbouring countries, President Masoud Pezeshkian said on Thursday, stressing that Tehran’s outreach is driven by its experience of war rather than weakness.
Addressing the 40th International Conference on Islamic Unity in Tehran, Pezeshkian said Iran was engaging with its neighbours to develop collective security mechanisms.
“We know what war is, and we know that when missiles and bombs land, they do not differentiate between the dreams of an Iranian mother and an Arab mother,” he said, according to a statement issued by his office.
Pezeshkian proposed that Muslim countries enter into a mutual security and non-aggression treaty. Under such an arrangement, he said, Islamic countries should commit to respecting one another’s territorial integrity, not allowing their territory, airspace or facilities to be used to attack another Muslim country, and refraining from supporting efforts aimed at destabilising or breaking up neighbouring states.
He also called for greater regional cooperation on security and proposed the creation of joint working groups to advance collaboration in infrastructure, trade, investment and clean energy.
The 40th International Conference on Islamic Unity began in Tehran on Thursday and will continue until Sunday.
Pezeshkian’s latest remarks come a week after he said Iran should seek to end its war with the United States while the country remained in a position of “power and dignity”.
Speaking at the 31st General Assembly of the Islamic Association of the Iranian Medical Society in Tehran, he said the conflict with Washington would have to end eventually.
“It is better that we end the war today when we are in a position of power and dignity, and the entire world acknowledges our victory,” he said, alleging that the United States had violated international regulations by attacking Iranian schools, hospitals and infrastructure.
Pezeshkian also described the memorandum of understanding signed between Iran and the United States in June as “honourable and valuable”. He said none of its provisions amounted to surrender and maintained that the obligations under the agreement rested with the other side.
