The Ludhiana Chapter of Indian Society of Agronomy (ISA), Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), organized an invited talk by Dr Lovreet Singh Shergill, Assistant Professor of Weed Science at Colorado State University (CSU), Colorado, USA, on the topic “Herbicide Resistance in Weeds”. Dr Shergill is an alumnus of PAU and joined as Assistant Professor of Weed Science at Colorado State University (CSU), Colorado, USA in 2024.
He earned his Ph.D. in Weed Science from the University of Adelaide, Australia (2016) following his M.Sc. in Agronomy from Punjab Agricultural University, India (2010). Previously, he has served as Assistant Professor of Weed Science at Montana State University.
Dr Shergill shared his experience in areas like weed biology, ecology, and how integrated weed management strategies could help in tackling herbicide resistant weeds. He discussed the history of herbicide resistance and how weeds evolved resistance to herbicides in different parts of the world.
The talk was succeeded by an interactive session in which Dr Shergill responded to queries about practical solutions to avoid evolution of herbicide resistance in weed management, especially in the context of changing climate and sustainable agricultural practices.
Dr Sandeep Singh Sandhu, Secretary, Ludhiana Chapter of Indian Society of Agronomy, welcomed the guest speaker and the postgraduate students as well as the faculty.
Dr Harmeet Singh, Chairman Teaching, Department of Agronomy, gave a brief introduction of the speaker. The lecture was organized in both online and offline modes, and many scientists from other Universities also joined in online mode.
Dr Satpal Singh, Department of Agronomy, while proposing a vote of thanks, acknowledged Dr Shergill for his informative and engaging talk. The event led to an enhanced understanding of the complexities of herbicide resistance and the importance of adopting innovative management strategies.
