Air quality is deteriorating across Rajasthan with the onset of winter, with Sawai Madhopur recording the state’s highest Air Quality Index (AQI) at 306, placing it in the ‘very poor’ category, according to the latest air quality bulletin.
PM2.5 was identified as the primary pollutant in Sawai Madhopur, raising concerns over the health risks of prolonged exposure, particularly for people with respiratory and cardiovascular conditions.
Several other cities also reported poor air quality, with Bikaner recording an AQI of 273. Dausa followed at 232, Churu at 231, Sikar at 227, Nagaur at 225, Alwar and Jhunjhunu at 224 each, Karauli at 215, Sri Ganganagar at 213, Jaisalmer at 210 and Jaipur at 207. PM10 was the dominant pollutant in Bikaner.
A number of cities remained in the moderate category. Tonk recorded an AQI of 196, Jodhpur 192, Hanumangarh 186, Deeg 185, Pali 184 and Bharatpur 179. Jhalawar, Kota, Chittorgarh, Bundi, Bhilwara, Udaipur and Sirohi also reported moderate pollution levels.
Under standard AQI classifications, readings between 201 and 300 fall in the poor category, while levels between 301 and 400 are classified as very poor. Prolonged exposure to very poor air quality can increase the risk of respiratory illness.
Children, senior citizens and people with asthma, lung or heart conditions are particularly vulnerable. Residents have been advised to avoid prolonged outdoor exposure, especially in areas recording poor and very poor AQI levels.
Meanwhile, citing deteriorating air quality in Delhi-NCR, the Rajasthan government has prohibited construction and demolition activities in districts adjoining the national capital.
