Lyricist and screenwriter Prasoon Joshi has shared an interesting anecdote about the popular song ‘Masakali’ from the 2009 film Delhi-6, revealing that its success inspired the name of the pigeon owned by Sonam Kapoor’s character in the movie.
Joshi recalled the story during an appearance on the quiz-based reality show Kaun Banega Crorepati, where he spoke to host Amitabh Bachchan about his association with the film and his contribution to its script development.
He said Sonam’s character in Delhi-6 had a pet pigeon, which came to be named Masakali after the song became popular.
Recalling the development, Joshi told Bachchan that he was involved in the film’s script when the character and her pet pigeon were being developed. The song’s popularity eventually led to the bird being given the same name.
Joshi also reflected on the appeal of the word itself, saying that its sound had stayed with people. He observed that sometimes a word has such a beautiful sound that it seems to draw the entire world around it.
‘Masakali’ featured in Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s Delhi-6, which starred Abhishek Bachchan and Sonam Kapoor. Sung by Mohit Chauhan, the track was composed by A.R. Rahman, with lyrics written by Joshi.
The song went on to become one of the film’s most memorable musical highlights, and its distinctive name remains closely associated with the movie.
