Independent MP Pappu Yadav has criticised Union Panchayati Raj Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh, popularly known as Lalan Singh, over his reported remarks about changing the system used to access government welfare benefits through Aadhaar.
Yadav argued that Aadhaar is a crucial identity document linked to the lives of nearly 1.4 billion Indians and said any move that creates additional difficulties for beneficiaries could undermine public confidence and harm democratic institutions.
His criticism followed remarks attributed to Lalan Singh that payments to welfare beneficiaries based on Aadhaar numbers would soon be replaced by a system using biometric authentication and Electoral Photo Identity Card (EPIC) numbers.
Questioning the need for additional documentation, Yadav said the government had issued Aadhaar cards and should not now make people produce multiple certificates to access benefits.
“The Aadhaar card is perfectly authentic, then why are you demanding ten different certificates? This is wrong. Such statements are not healthy for democracy. You are causing distress to the public; it is your own failure,” he said.
The MP also challenged allegations that foreign entities or resources were supporting the Opposition to create unrest in the country. Referring to claims of foreign funding for the Congress, he asked the government to initiate legal action if it had evidence to substantiate the allegations.
Yadav further accused the government of spreading claims that Rs 5 lakh was being spent daily on Rahul Gandhi’s public rallies. He alleged that such narratives were intended to mislead younger generations, including Gen-Z and Gen-Alpha.
He also criticised what he described as the government’s alleged links with crony capitalists, saying young people were already dissatisfied with the handling of various issues.
