The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken suo motu cognisance of media reports concerning the death of tribal social worker Nisha Bhagat in Ranchi, Jharkhand, and sought a detailed report from the state authorities within seven days.

According to media reports cited by the NCW, Bhagat expressed distress during a Facebook Live session over online trolling, harassment and complaints against the local administration and police. During the session, she also contacted the officer in charge of the Pithoria police station and spoke about her difficulties and thoughts of ending her life, an NCW official said.

Commission Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar has written to Jharkhand officials, seeking an impartial, thorough and time-bound investigation into the case. She has also called for a review of the police response, examination of action taken on earlier complaints and preservation of the Facebook Live recording, call records and other digital evidence.

The Commission has further sought accountability if any negligence or dereliction of duty is found on the part of police personnel, along with necessary assistance for the deceased’s family. A detailed action taken report (ATR) has been sought within seven days.

“No woman’s suffering or cry for help should go unheard. Sensitivity, timely action, and accountability are essential to women’s safety,” Rahatkar said.

Earlier, the NCW chairperson had announced the launch of a support group named ‘SAATHI’ for rape survivors and their families.

In a post on X, she said, “The National Commission for Women has launched yet another sensitive initiative. Its name is ‘SAATHI’! This support group is an effort to provide emotional and mental strength to women victims of rape and their families.”

Rahatkar said the initiative aims to provide survivors and their loved ones a platform to express their feelings, share their experiences and find the courage to move forward.

She also referred to the efforts of a Pune-based couple, Shubham and Smt. Shubham Kulkarni, whose three-year-old daughter was raped and murdered. According to Rahatkar, the Pune Rural Police completed the investigation and secured a death sentence for the accused in 59 days.

Despite their loss, the couple established a foundation in memory of their daughter to support survivors and their families. Rahatkar said their efforts to help other families facing similar trauma were deeply inspiring.
