Chennai, November 7, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)
Actor, producer and parliamentarian Kamal Haasan’s upcoming film Sandiyar, directed by S U Arun Kumar, went on floors in Chennai on Friday, coinciding with the actor’s birthday.
The film’s production house, Raaj Kamal Films International, announced the start of shooting on social media with the message: “6 ROUNDS, ZERO MERCY. Revenge does give satisfaction, but… Happy Birthday to our, SANDIYAR! SHOOT BEGINS TODAY. #KamalHaasan #SUArunkumar.”
Director S U Arun Kumar also shared an emotional note in Tamil, reflecting on the opportunity to work with Kamal Haasan. He said the influence of great artists had shaped his work, knowingly or unknowingly, and that these influences had continued to enrich him.
“Yes, today I am standing hand in hand with that magnificent great artist Kamal Haasan,” he wrote.
Arun Kumar said he was happy not only to direct his mentor, who had chosen him as a filmmaker and given life to his story, but also to have the opportunity to learn during the journey.
He also acknowledged producer R Mahendran and co-producer S Disney for helping him realise the project. The director said he and his team would put in their full effort to present a fine film to audiences.
The makers had announced the title Sandiyar a day earlier. The choice has drawn attention because Kamal Haasan had originally selected the same title for his 2004 film Virumaandi. Following objections from certain groups and a controversy over its use, the film was eventually renamed Virumaandi.
Twenty-two years later, Kamal Haasan has chosen the title for his upcoming collaboration with Arun Kumar.
The film’s technical team includes Anirudh Ravichander as music composer, National Award-winning stunt choreographers Anbariv, cinematographer Sunil KS, production designer C S Balachander and costume designer Amritha Ram.
The film is produced by Kamal Haasan and R Mahendran, with S Disney as co-producer.
