A 16-year-old girl has been accused of throwing a newborn baby out of a window after allegedly giving birth in the toilet of a private nursing home in Uttarpara, West Bengal’s Hooghly district, police said on Saturday.
The incident triggered outrage and a commotion at the nursing home in Ward No. 15 of Uttarpara Municipality. Officers from Uttarpara Police Station reached the spot after receiving information and are investigating the matter.
According to police, the minor, a resident of Howrah, was admitted to the nursing home late on Friday night by her family members after complaining of stomach pain. Her family claimed they were unaware that she was pregnant and had brought her to the facility believing she was suffering from an ordinary stomach ailment.
Nursing home owner and doctor Sucheta Mukherjee also said they had no knowledge of the girl’s pregnancy. She said the minor’s blood was tested on Saturday morning and that, when her stomach pain increased, she went to the toilet on her own. It is alleged that she gave birth there and threw the newborn out through a window.
Local resident Souvik Das told reporters that he was working in the area around 8 am on Saturday when he heard something falling from above. On approaching the spot, he saw a newborn lying on the ground. He claimed that a nursing home employee quickly came downstairs, picked up the baby and went inside.
Residents expressed anger over the incident and demanded strict legal action.
Uttarpara BJP MLA Dipanjan Chakraborty said he had visited the police station and would seek the strictest punishment. He also raised concerns about nursing homes allegedly not following rules and regulations.
