The Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) has arrested a 45-year-old man allegedly associated with a Maoist organisation and carrying a bounty of Rs 10 lakh announced by the Jharkhand Police.
The accused, identified as Sanjay Sarju Yadav, alias Godaram Yadav, was apprehended from the Thakurli area of Thane district following intelligence inputs that he was hiding there to evade arrest, ATS officials said on Saturday.
According to the officials, senior ATS officers received information about the presence of the wanted Maoist in Thakurli and directed the concerned unit to verify the input and take appropriate action.
Yadav is a resident of Devgan village under Chhatarpur police station in Jharkhand’s Palamu district. He is reportedly a member of the Zonal Committee of a Maoist organisation.
During questioning, he allegedly disclosed that he had been staying in Thakurli for around 10 days while evading law enforcement agencies.
After his arrest, the Maharashtra ATS handed him over to the Jharkhand Police, which subsequently took him into formal custody. Further investigation is underway.
The arrest comes amid heightened security vigilance in Jharkhand following reports of renewed activity by CPI (Maoist) cadres. The state police have reportedly directed district Superintendents of Police to strengthen surveillance.
In October, security forces killed Maoist sub-zonal commander Kunwar Manjhi, alias Sahdeo Manjhi, in Jharkhand. Earlier, in July, 16 Naxalites surrendered in Ranchi, including regional commander Santosh Mahto. The group carried a combined bounty of Rs 39 lakh.
The Centre has been pursuing security operations and surrender initiatives to dismantle Left-Wing Extremist networks.
