Kolkata Police has imposed prohibitory restrictions for two months in the area surrounding Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee’s residence in south Kolkata following clashes between Trinamool and BJP supporters in the early hours of Saturday.
The restrictions have been imposed under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, prohibiting the assembly of people in the specified area. A police official confirmed that the order came into effect on Saturday morning and would remain in force for two months.
The restricted zone extends from Kalighat Bridge towards Balaram Bose Ghat Road, Harish Mukherjee Road and Hazra Road. Police have also stepped up surveillance to prevent gatherings outside the residence of the Diamond Harbour MP.
The clashes broke out in phases between 2.30 am and 3.30 am, shortly after supporters gathered outside Banerjee’s residence to mark his 39th birthday. According to accounts from the two sides, an argument escalated into scuffles and stone-pelting. Several people were reportedly injured, while police personnel resorted to baton charges to disperse the groups.
Trinamool supporters alleged that BJP workers raised slogans and damaged birthday banners, cutouts and a nearby party office. Banerjee accused BJP supporters of orchestrating an attack on his residence and claimed the incident was the seventh attempt on his life in six months.
In a social media post, he alleged that the attackers had conducted reconnaissance for two days before the incident and criticised both the police and judiciary over what he described as a lack of action. These allegations have not been independently established.
Banerjee also staged a sit-in outside his residence over the incident but entered the house around 6.30 am on Saturday after police intervened. The protest reportedly included an argument with officers who asked him to move to prevent further escalation.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had not issued a public statement on the clashes at the time of the report.
