Former India cricket captain Kapil Dev has congratulated Pranavi Urs for winning India’s first-ever gold medal in the women’s individual golf event at the Asian Games, praising her for displaying “nerves of steel and tremendous belief” under pressure. He also lauded the Indian women’s team for securing a silver medal at the continental showpiece.
Pranavi delivered a composed performance in the final round at Kasugai Country Club East Course to finish at 15-under 265 and claim the historic individual gold. She also played a key role in India’s silver-medal-winning women’s team alongside Aditi Ashok and Diksha Dagar.
Entering the final round with a three-stroke lead over Singapore’s Shannon Tan, Pranavi faced an early setback with a triple bogey on the third hole. However, she bounced back with birdies on the sixth, 10th and 13th holes before holding her nerve to card an even-par 70 and secure the gold.
Kapil Dev, who is also the president of the Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI), described the achievement as a moment of immense pride for Indian golf.
“Pranavi Urs’ historic gold medal in the women’s individual event and the silver medal won by our women’s team at the Asian Games are moments of immense pride for India and Indian golf,” Kapil said.
He added that the medals reflected the talent, determination and hard work of the players, as well as the growing strength of women’s golf in India.
Kapil also praised the collective effort of Pranavi, Aditi and Diksha, who secured India’s first-ever medal in the women’s team golf event at the Asian Games. The Indian trio finished with a combined total of 14-under 546 across four rounds to claim silver.
Congratulating the golfers on behalf of the DP World PGTI and the Indian golfing fraternity, Kapil said their performance demonstrated what could be achieved through self-belief, discipline and fearless competition on the biggest stage.
