Iran’s Army Navy said on Saturday that an oil tanker described as a “violating” vessel caught fire earlier in the day after hitting naval mines east of the Strait of Hormuz.
In a statement on the army’s website, the navy said the tanker had switched off its navigation systems and entered what it called a “forbidden and unsafe” area despite warnings. It said the vessel struck the mines and caught fire.
The navy warned that other vessels entering restricted areas of the waterway while ignoring warnings could face a similar fate, Xinhua News Agency reported.
Meanwhile, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said its aerospace division had established underground facilities for missile and drone production and was continuing to increase the range of its missiles.
IRGC spokesman Hossein Mohebbi said at a press conference in Tehran that Iran had rapidly shifted missile and drone production from surface facilities to underground sites.
“We are constantly enhancing the range of our missiles, and we will not stop in this regard,” Mohebbi said. He added that all tangible and intangible assets of a “hostile country” were within Iran’s reach.
Mohebbi warned that Iran would unveil military surprises if its adversaries renewed attacks, asserting that the country was prepared to defend its existence, identity and territorial integrity without geographical limitations.
His remarks came amid heightened US threats of military action against Iran and reports of US strikes targeting the country’s southern Qeshm Island early Saturday.
Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency reported that two missiles had hit the island but provided no details about the damage.
US President Donald Trump said on Friday that American forces had carried out fresh strikes targeting Iran’s air defence systems, describing the action as “minor”.
The reported attack was the second US strike on Qeshm Island this week. The Wall Street Journal, citing US officials, reported that the United States had attacked the island on Monday.
