All 22 crew members aboard a cargo ship that caught fire in the Sea of Oman have been rescued by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Coast Guard, with no serious injuries reported, the Emirates News Agency said on Sunday.
Citing the UAE National Guard, the agency reported that the crew members, all of Arab nationality, were in stable condition after receiving first aid. They were subsequently handed over to the relevant authorities.
The rescue operation was launched after the Coast Guard received a distress call from the vessel reporting a fire on board. Authorities have not disclosed the cause of the blaze or the extent of damage to the ship.
The incident comes amid heightened maritime tensions around the Strait of Hormuz and the Gulf of Oman.
In a separate development, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy claimed that two oil tankers attempting to navigate what it described as an unauthorised route through the Strait of Hormuz had caught fire after striking naval mines. The IRGC alleged that both vessels had disabled their navigation and GPS systems. The claims have not been independently verified.
Meanwhile, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) said its forces had disabled a commercial cargo vessel in the Gulf of Oman after its crew allegedly ignored repeated warnings and attempted to breach the US naval blockade against Iran.
CENTCOM identified the vessel as the St. Kitts-flagged M/V Huda and said a US military aircraft fired precision munitions at its stern after the crew was directed to leave the targeted areas. It added that the ship had attempted to leave regional waters after visiting an Iranian port.
The cause of the fire aboard the UAE-rescued vessel and any connection, if any, with the other reported maritime incidents were not established in the available statements.
