The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will organise a special programme at its Central Office in New Delhi on Sunday to mark the 100th birth anniversary of veteran party leader and former Deputy Prime Minister, Bharat Ratna Lal Krishna Advani.
The programme, coinciding with Diwali, will be attended by BJP National President Nitin Nabin, Advani’s daughter Pratibha Advani and Union Minister Piyush Goyal, along with other senior party leaders.
According to the schedule shared by the BJP, the event will begin at 10 a.m. with a puja and havan, followed by a 20-minute video presentation featuring significant moments from Advani’s life and excerpts from his speeches.
Pratibha Advani and Piyush Goyal will address the gathering and share their thoughts on the veteran leader’s life and legacy. Nitin Nabin will also speak about Advani’s contributions to the nation and the BJP, including his role in shaping the party organisation over several decades.
The BJP said the programme would commemorate Advani’s life, dedication to the nation, contribution to the party and long record of public service. The party also reiterated its respect for the contributions and service of its senior leaders and guiding figures.
Born on November 8, 1927, in Karachi, present-day Pakistan, Advani played a key role in the BJP’s growth into a major national political force. He served as party president on multiple occasions and helped strengthen its organisational network across the country.
His nationwide Ram Rath Yatra in 1990 became a significant turning point in Indian politics and helped expand the BJP’s political reach. Advani served as Deputy Prime Minister from 2002 to 2004 in the government led by Atal Bihari Vajpayee and also held important portfolios, including Home Affairs.
In recognition of his contribution to public life, Advani was conferred the Bharat Ratna in 2024. He was awarded the Padma Vibhushan in 2015.
