The personal information of around 39,000 customers and employees has been leaked from Mirae Asset Securities Co., one of South Korea’s leading brokerage firms, the company said.
According to the brokerage, account numbers of around 3,800 customers were exposed, along with personal information belonging to more than 35,000 current and former employees and contractors, Yonhap news agency reported.
The company said unauthorised external access occurred on Wednesday and Thursday, targeting its mobile web phone-authentication login service and internal system, respectively. The leaked corporate data included names, employee identification numbers, email addresses, mobile phone numbers and passwords.
Mirae Asset Securities said it blocked the affected access routes after detecting suspicious activity from external IP addresses and activated its emergency response system. It also reported the incident to the Financial Services Commission, Financial Supervisory Service and Personal Information Protection Commission.
The breach comes days after other companies in the Mirae Asset group, including Mirae Asset Life Insurance, experienced similar data leaks.
The incident is the latest in a series of data breaches affecting South Korea’s financial sector. According to the Financial Services Commission, more than 470,000 personal data records have been leaked from 37 financial companies over the past month, with the estimated amount of stolen funds reaching 1 billion won (US$745,000).
Since September 30, when the first breach was detected, 40 data leak incidents have been reported across 37 companies, including four commercial banks, five financial investment firms, three insurance companies and five savings banks, the regulator said.
Separately, cryptocurrency exchange Binance said hackers used fake job interviews and an internal artificial intelligence tool in a cyberattack that resulted in the theft of more than US$6 billion in digital assets last week.
The US Federal Bureau of Investigation has attributed the theft to North Korea, identifying a hacking group known as TraderTraitor, which has previously been linked to cryptocurrency thefts.
