The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has secured the conviction of Adnanali Sarkar in the Maharashtra ISIS terror module case, officials said on Saturday.
The Special NIA Court in Mumbai found Sarkar guilty under Sections 13, 18, 20, 38 and 39 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and Sections 201 and 120-B of the Indian Penal Code. It sentenced him to a maximum of six years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a total fine of Rs 65,000.
Sarkar was the fifth accused in the case registered by the NIA’s Mumbai branch. The agency took over the investigation suo motu on June 28, 2023, following information from the Ministry of Home Affairs about an alleged conspiracy by ISIS members to threaten India’s unity, integrity, security and sovereignty.
During the investigation, the NIA uncovered an alleged wider conspiracy with international links involving foreign-based ISIS handlers. Investigators found that the accused were allegedly propagating the banned outfit’s extremist ideology, recruiting members, raising funds for terrorist activities and circulating propaganda material, including magazines such as Voice of Hind and Voice of Khurasan.
A total of six persons were chargesheeted in the case: Tabish Nasser Siddiqui, Zulfikar Ali Barodawala alias Lalabhai, Sharjeel Shaikh, Aakif Ateeque Nachan, Zubair Noor Mohammad Shaikh alias Abu Nusaiba and Adnanali Sarkar.
The court had earlier framed charges against all six accused. While Sarkar has now been convicted and sentenced, the trial against the remaining five continues. All six accused remain in judicial custody, according to the source.
The NIA described the conviction as an important step in its efforts to dismantle ISIS-linked terror modules and disrupt networks involved in radicalisation, recruitment and funding.
