Hollywood actor-director Henry Winkler has opened up about his experience with therapy, revealing that he felt “very confused” when he first began the process in his 60s. The 81-year-old actor said therapy has changed his outlook on life.
Appearing on The Drew Barrymore Show, Winkler recalled his first interaction with a therapist and said he initially struggled to understand where he stood emotionally.
“I was very confused. I was in my 60s, and I had a birthday. I went and the first thing that the therapist asked me was, ‘Oh wait a minute, where are you?’ And I had no idea what the woman was saying to me,” he said.
Winkler described his gradual progress through therapy, using the metaphor of an oil drum to explain how he had slowly become more open to the world. His account included the phrase “lowly but surely”, as reproduced in the interview.
Host Drew Barrymore, 51, said she appreciated his metaphors and observed that people could experience major breakthroughs even after years of therapy or life experience.
Winkler responded with another metaphor, saying, “I see myself as a chunk of Swiss cheese, so I’m walking around and there are a lot of holes I could fall in, and I’m working to become a chunk of cheddar”.
Meanwhile, Winkler has previously credited luck as a major factor in his success. The actor has enjoyed a career spanning more than 50 years in the entertainment industry.
